There was a moment as I walked through The St. Regis Langkawi when I almost forgot I was in Malaysia.
Perhaps it was the elegant Moorish inspired architecture, framed by towering palms, or the sense of quiet grandeur that greeted me on arrival.
Then Langkawi began to make itself known.
Not loudly, but through thoughtful details woven throughout the stay: a pandan leaf folded into an origami rooster, a Bloody Mary with a distinctly local twist, conversations about the island’s remarkable flora and traditions that felt entirely at home here. A butler who knew exactly when to step forward and exactly when to step back.
They are the rituals that have long defined the St. Regis experience. Thoughtfully repeated, quietly refined and, at The St. Regis Langkawi, given a distinctly local identity.
This wasn’t my first stay at The St. Regis Langkawi, but it was the first time I found myself noticing how naturally those rituals shaped the experience. Individually, each one might seem insignificant. Together, they create something far more memorable than luxury alone ever could.
The Astor Room
The Astor Room was exactly howI remember it to be. Elegant, spacious and wonderfully comfortable without trying too hard to impress. Warm timber, soft lighting and subtle colours gave it a sense of calm that immediately made me want to unpack rather than rush off exploring.
Then my eyes fell on the bed. A towel, meticulously folded into the shape of a crab, rested among fresh flowers. Across the room, a handwritten note, chocolates and a selection of delicately presented nibbles awaited on the coffee table. It was thoughtful without feeling overdone.
It was charming. Hotels often talk about attention to detail. The St. Regis Langkawi simply gets on with it.
Another detail I found myself appreciating throughout the stay was the butler service.I’ve occasionally found butler service in luxury hotels a little intimidating, almost as though someone is constantly waiting for you to ask for something.
That wasn’t the case here. When I asked about borrowing an iron, I was told that the pressing service normally required four hours’ notice. Before I could even think about what to do, the butler warmly offered to press my dress himself.
I politely declined. It only needed a couple of minutes. He smiled, wished me a lovely evening and carried on.
That interaction perfectly summed up the service throughout the resort. Professional, thoughtful and genuinely attentive, yet never intrusive. It’s a surprisingly difficult balance to get right.
Champagne Before Dinner
One of the rituals most closely associated with St. Regis is Champagne Sabrage. Dating back to the era of Napoleon Bonaparte, the tradition has become the signature Evening Ritual at St. Regis hotels around the world, marking the transition from day to evening with a celebratory sabre opening of a bottle of Champagne. Watching it performed on the lawn just before sunset somehow feels perfectly at home here. There’s something wonderfully theatrical about it, yet it never feels like a performance staged for guests. It simply feels like another chapter in a tradition that’s been carried from one St. Regis to another around the world.
Naturally, I became rather inspired.
The following morning, I attempted my own version in my room with a bottle of sparkling wine and… a butter knife.
Let’s just say I came away with enormous respect for the professionals.
The butter knife survived.
So did the bottle.
I accepted defeat, poured myself a glass instead and enjoyed it from the comfort of a warm bath. Some traditions, it turns out, are better admired than re-created.
Dinner at Kayuputi
If you’re staying at The St. Regis Langkawi, I’d highly recommend arriving early rather than simply turning up for your reservation. The setting deserves to be enjoyed slowly.
Looking out across the Andaman Sea with a cocktail in hand, conversation seemed to flow as easily as the drinks. There was no rush to be seated, no pressure to move on. It felt wonderfully relaxed while still retaining the elegance The St. Regis is known for.
Then dinner began. And somehow it managed to surpass the setting.
Every course arrived beautifully presented, but never at the expense of flavour. Service was polished without becoming overly formal, and every member of the team seemed genuinely proud to explain the inspiration behind each dish.
Then came the asam pedas risotto.
Out of this world.
It’s still one of the most memorable dishes I’ve eaten this year. Somehow the familiar tangy heat of asam pedas worked beautifully with the creamy richness of risotto. It shouldn’t have worked as well as it did.
It absolutely did. Compliments to Chef Universa. Weeks later, I’m still raving about that dish.
The Bloody Mary I Had Been Waiting For
As much as I enjoyed watching Champagne Sabrage, it was the Bloody Mary I had been looking forward to.
The cocktail has been part of St. Regis lore since 1934, and every St. Regis around the world creates its own interpretation inspired by its destination. At The St. Regis Langkawi, pandan gives the classic drink a distinctly local identity.
I began with the virgin version, beautifully balanced and surprisingly satisfying, before returning later for the original. It was everything I’d hoped it would be.
Like the best traditions, it respected its history while embracing where it was.
A Walk Through Nature, Led by Knowledge
Luxury often draws your eyes to the obvious. Uncle Selva encouraged me to look much closer.
The resort’s resident naturalist has spent decades studying Langkawi’s unique ecosystem, and it quickly became clear that this wasn’t simply a leisurely stroll through beautifully landscaped gardens. Every few steps there was another story.
A medicinal plant used for generations. The origins of a towering tree. Why certain species thrive here while others don’t. How seemingly ordinary plants quietly support the island’s wildlife. What looked like an attractive garden to me became a fascinating classroom in the hands of someone who knows it intimately.
What impressed me most wasn’t simply the depth of his knowledge, but the enthusiasm with which he shared it. Every question was met with another story, another fact or another reason to stop and look a little closer.
There was humour too. Every now and then, with a grin, he’d encourage us to “walk a bit faster”, only to stop moments later because he’d spotted another plant, another bird or another detail worth explaining.
By the end of the walk, I realised I’d learnt far more than I ever expected. It gave me a much deeper appreciation of Langkawi itself, not just The St. Regis.
For anyone staying here, don’t skip the nature walk. It turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my stay.
L’Orangerie
L’Orangerie is where I found myself twice in one day.
Breakfast is served in an elegant dining room overlooking the resort’s gardens, with beautiful Malaysian artwork adding colour to the walls. The buffet is extensive, but it was the à la carte menu that caught my attention.
The lobster omelette sounded too good to ignore, and it didn’t disappoint.
I returned for lunch later that day. And had lobster again…because why not! Apparently once wasn’t enough.
Like every meal I had at The St. Regis Langkawi, the quality of the food never wavered. From breakfast through to dinner at Kayuputi, it was consistently excellent.
The Pool and Private Beach
The St. Regis Langkawi is only a short drive from Kuah, the island’s main town and duty free shopping hub.
Yet from the resort pool, that feels surprisingly irrelevant. That balance between accessibility and tranquillity is one of the resort’s greatest strengths.
Most of my spare time disappeared between the pool and the private beach, with the Andaman Sea rarely looking anything but inviting. For all the rituals, fine dining and memorable experiences, it was also rather nice to do… absolutely nothing.

Looking back, it wasn’t one suite, one meal or one particular view that defined my stay.
It was the collection of rituals. Some have travelled through generations of St. Regis hotels around the world. Others could only belong to Langkawi.
Individually, none of them was especially extravagant.
Together, they captured everything The St. Regis Langkawi does so well. Honouring long held traditions while giving them a distinctly Malaysian identity.
And yes, despite my failed attempt at Champagne Sabrage, I did eventually enjoy that bottle of sparkling wine.
Just without the sabre.
That’s probably how I’ll remember The St. Regis Langkawi too.
